There is a certain Japanese philosophy called “Kintsugi” which consists of mending pottery with lacquer resin mixed with powdered gold. As a philosophy it speaks of breakage and repair becoming part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise.

The gold filling between the broken pieces is now a part of what makes this pottery beautiful. As we honestly examine our own lives, we will notice we all have some broken pieces or chipped places. Many of these broken or chipped places are the results of the actions of others, and no fault of our own. It is an unfortunate but real part of life.

The most beautiful people are those who have known suffering, known struggle, known loss, and have found their way out of the depths. These persons have an understanding of life that fills them with compassion. Beautiful people do not just happen.
