Intake Team

Sarah Burton, C.M.H.C.
Intake Clinical Manager

Sarah earned her bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Utah State University and her master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from the University of Phoenix. She has over 15 years of experience in the mental health field primarily working with women and adolescents. Sarah’s post-graduate training includes Motivational Interviewing, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Trauma-Focused Substance Abuse Treatment, and Psychodrama.

Sarah has worked with women in a residential substance abuse treatment setting. This experience gave her the passion to assist women with acknowledging and honoring the healing power they have within themselves. She feels grateful and honored to be a part of The Younique Foundation’s mission.

Katie Wilson
Intake Coordinator

Katie has four years of experience in the field of substance abuse and trauma. She has worked in drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers where she taught groups on relapse prevention, family healing, and self-care. She has a passion for working with others and using her past experiences to assist in the healing process. Katie is a mother of three and enjoys time with her family, camping, hiking, and exploring new places.

Lauren Stewart, L.C.S.W.
Clinical Therapist | Utah

Lauren received her undergraduate degree in Social Work from Brigham Young Univeristy – Idaho and her master’s degree at Brigham Young University. Her passion in entering the helping field has been empowering others to see their strength and potential in paying attention to their unique and powerful traits within. During her education she spent time dedicated to community outreach, volunteering with programs working with underprivileged children, children with disabilities, as well as families in need. She worked at the Utah State Prison with female inmates, running their trauma recovery groups. For the past three years she has worked primarily with teenagers, specifically teenage girls within outpatient, residential, and psychiatric residential facilities addressing complex trauma, neglect, and substance abuse. Post- graduate education includes becoming EMDR trained.

Lauren was blessed to have the opportunity to join The Younique Foundation team and feels privileged to contribute to the mission of being part of a woman’s healing journey. She is enthusiastic and passionate about human behavior and the ability to heal and recover, and the power human beings can gain from one another and their inner strength. She is a lifelong learner and am always trying new things. She spends her time serving the community through the Utah County Judicial System as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for children in foster care. Lauren loves spending time with her family, being outdoors, playing volleyball, and making friends wherever she goes.

Maddie Nelson
Intake Coordinator | Utah

Maddie has 4 years experience working with teenagers and young adults in treatment centers that specialize in sexual abuse and trauma. She was a counselor and coach in different programs throughout Utah during which she was studying at Brighman Young University working on her undergraduate degree. She graduated in 2020 with her Bachelors in Sociology and has a passion for helping others in any way she can. She strongly believes that mindset and goal setting can drive tremendous change in people. She cares about influencing and uplifting others despite challenges we face in our daily lives. She enjoys traveling and searching for the most unique places to visit, is constantly looking for new adventures and hobbies, and strives to always live life to the fullest.

Betsy Kanarowski, Ph.D., L.C.S.W.
Director of Clinical Services

Betsy is committed to helping individuals, families, and communities effectively understand and navigate the many aspects of sexual trauma healing, and she is a strong advocate for education regarding sexual abuse of individuals with disabilities. Betsy is an experienced therapist, trainer, and educator with over 20 years of experience as a mental health professional. Being part of women’s unique healing journeys is especially close to her heart. Betsy is honored to have worked with survivors of domestic violence, women struggling with addiction, and in women’s services in medical settings.

Betsy received her Ph.D. in Special Education from the University of Utah, her master’s degree in social work from the University of Denver, and her bachelor’s degree in social work from the University of Wyoming. She is a licensed clinical social worker (L.C.S.W.) and certified sex therapist. She loves the outdoors, travel, reading, and spending time with her family and ridiculously spoiled dog.

Saria Karhunen, L.C.S.W.
Senior Retreat Manager | Georgia

Saria has over 20 years of experience as a mental health professional dedicated to helping those who struggle with trauma, addiction, and developmental disabilities. She received her master’s degree from Brigham Young University in Social Work and her bachelor’s degree in Psychology with minors in Family Sciences and Art History, graduating magna cum laude. She is a licensed clinical social worker (L.C.S.W.) and completed post-graduate training in Motivational Interviewing and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).

Prior to her work with The Younique Foundation, Saria was a Program Manager at Foothill Treatment Center, a residential treatment program serving women and men struggling with substance use disorders. She was born and raised in Finland and moved to the United States when she was nineteen. Her passions include travel, opera, food, cats, reading, yoga, hiking, and camping

Annette Curtis, L.C.S.W.
Senior Retreat Manager | Utah

Annette earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Brigham Young University and her master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Utah. Before working at The Younique Foundation, she worked with children, adolescents, and families for over 23 years, primarily with youth in the foster care system due to abuse and neglect. She has worked extensively with clients who have experienced sexual abuse and trauma as well as PTSD, depression, and anxiety. She is trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and has used this technique in helping survivors work through past trauma.

She has trained and presented locally and nationally on the subjects of healthy sexuality, warning signs of abuse, and how to respond to sexual abuse. She has enjoyed her time working at The Younique Foundation and is dedicated to helping survivors of childhood sexual abuse heal from their past. Annette has been honored to be a part of the healing journey for many survivors. She is amazed at the strength and resiliency she has witnessed with the women at The Haven Retreat. When she is not at work, she can be found spending time with her husband and three children. She enjoys having fun, laughing, and going to Disneyland with her family.

Ciara Green M.A, L.P.C
Clinical Manager | Georgia

Ciara has lived in Georgia most of her life, but still feels connected to her New York roots. She earned her master’s degree in counseling from Argosy University and her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Georgia Southern University. She is a licensed professional counselor (LPC) and is currently pursuing her certification as a professional counselor supervisor (CPCS). Ciara’s clinical experience includes working within a community mental health agency, crisis stabilization unit, and private practice. Ciara also provided group, individual, and family counseling to diverse populations that addressed trauma, depression, anxiety, PTSD, and substance abuse. Ciara’s passion for the mental health field intensified when she had the opportunity to work with a program that provided refuge to adolescent female human trafficking and sexual abuse survivors.

Ciara is a proud cheer and soccer mom who enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, reading, and creating DIY crafts/projects. She is grateful to be part of the healing journey for the women attending the retreat. Ciara is looking forward to empowering and educating survivors, as well as inspiring hope.

Carla Catmull, L.C.S.W.
Clinical Manager | Utah

Carla is a Utah licensed clinical social worker (L.C.S.W) with over 10 years of clinical experience working with children, adolescents, and adults; specifically working through trauma, addiction, and various mental health struggles. She graduated from the University of Utah with a master’s degree in Social Work in 2011. She has been EMDR certified since 2017.

Carla believes in client-centered therapy and utilizes various modalities to assist each individual with their specific needs. She deeply understands that life is hard and there are unseen struggles that people carry. She believes that everyone can heal and move forward and considers it a privilege to walk side by side with each client in their healing journey.

Jarretta Mahalko, M.S.W., L.C.S.W.
Clinical Therapist | Georgia

Jarretta earned her bachelor’s degree in behavioral science at Utah Valley University and master’s degree in social work at Brigham Young University. Jarretta’s clinical experience includes working at the Utah County Department of Drug and Alcohol Prevention and Treatment in the Day Treatment Program. Jarretta also worked at the Utah State Prison in the women’s in-patient mental health program. She has completed training in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) and has completed post-graduate certification at the University of Michigan in sex therapy.

She had the privilege of growing up in the military and has lived in some interesting and unique places. This fostered her ability to respect and love different cultures, traditions, and peoples. As a child she used to love to watch people and their behavior with curiosity. She was also the one who always brought home every stray animal to love. As an adult, she has transferred that passion and compassion to facilitating growth and empowering women. She loves her family, the beach, and her dog, Harley. She is passionate about her work with The Younique Foundation and is excited to do all she can to help trauma survivors heal.

Mallory Wirick, L.C.S.W.
Clinical Therapist | Utah

Mallory graduated with her bachelor’s degree from Utah State University and went on to obtain a Master of Social Work from New York University. She discovered her passion for providing treatment to survivors of trauma early on in her career and has continued finding joy serving this population.

She has previously worked in a hospital setting both in New York and Utah, though her focus as a therapist has been in treating survivors of trauma. She worked at Bellevue/NYU’s Program for Survivors of Torture where she provided individual therapy to asylum seekers and taught psychoeducational groups to reduce PTSD and MDD symptoms. Additionally, she worked with inner-city youth in Washington Heights in relationship abuse prevention. She provided long-term counseling to students affected by abuse and enjoyed teaching classes on consent and the different types of abuse. Mallory has been EMDR trained and continues to attend trainings as a means of keeping on top of her clinical skills.

Mallory is grateful for the opportunity to contribute to The Younique Foundation’s mission. She is passionate about shedding light on the issue of childhood sexual abuse. She finds meaning in being a warm, steady support as survivors discover their own resilience, strength and find hope. When not at work, Mallory enjoys camping, hiking, learning new languages, fixing up old furniture, thrift shopping and traveling.

Kelli Murray, L.C.S.W.
Clinical Therapist | Utah

Kelli received her MSW from the University of Utah. Before joining our team, Kelli worked with both adults and children through the Family Support & Treatment Center, Utah Foster Care, and Wasatch Mental Health. In these positions Kelli developed a love for working with all ages to heal from trauma. Kelli likes taking a client-centered approach in therapy to help clients feel more empowered and whole. Kelli is trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma-Focused CBT, Cognitive Processing Therapy, Crisis Response Planning, Sand Tray, and Play Therapy. Another passion of Kelli’s is working with children to prevent child abuse as a Radkids Instructor. Outside of work Kelli loves reading, playing board games, doing puzzles, and spending time with her husband and three children.

Rachel Denton
Clinical Therapist | Utah

Rachel graduated with her bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University in education and went on to receive a Master of Social Work from University of Utah. Before joining The Younique Foundation, Rachel worked primarily with women struggling with sexual compulsive behavior as well as betrayal trauma. This is where she found her passion for working in women’s issues and trauma and continues to find great fulfillment in doing so. Rachel knows the importance of a non-judgmental environment to an individual’s journey to wholeness and strives to create safe places for that work to occur. She connects with each individual with a determination to truly hear their stories backed with a drive to advocate for their truth and healing.

Rachel has been trained in EMDR, Internal Family Systems, Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Sand Tray therapy. When not at work, Rachel enjoys rock climbing, hiking, gardening and camping with her husband and dog.

Julie Cattani
Case Manager | Utah

For 21 years, Julie proudly held the full-time title of COO for the Cattani Clan. From PTA President to room mother, volunteer to chauffer, she enjoyed each moment with her children. Her previous experience includes working with cancer patients at a rehabilitation clinic and Director of Operations for a company that produced halftime shows for college bowl games. Julie is grateful to be engaged in a work that promotes hope and healing in the lives of beautiful deserving women. She finds it a privilege to learn from the examples of many brave survivors. In her spare time, she loves nothing more than spending time with family and running on trails in the beautiful Utah mountains.

Sierra Balfour
Night Case Manager | Utah

Sierra Balfour earned her bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Liberty University, with plans to attend graduate school for social work in the near future. Sierra came to The Younique Foundation with over 14 years of experience in human service roles as an advocate for people with diagnosed disabilities, case manager, certified nursing assistant, volunteer, and self-defense instructor. Sierra’s passion is to bring healing to people who have been through traumatic and stressful experiences and she seeks to impact the lives of people in a way that is empowering. She has a “living list” which helps her to attain her dreams and experience life to the fullest while she’s still young. Sierra’s hobbies include fishing, art journaling, outdoor activities, traveling, scuba diving, and spending time with family. She also loves to travel to the Florida Keys to explore coral reefs and spend time in the Tetons.

Shyanne Benjamin
Night Case Manager | Georgia

Shyanne is originally from Los Angeles, California, and earned her bachelor’s in human services—with an emphasis in Society and Social Problems from Southern New Hampshire University. Shyanne has served a wide range of communities such as children with autism, adults with developmental disabilities, college students, and foster youth. Shyanne’s Clinical experience includes working on a crisis stabilization team, supporting the families of youth with dual mental health diagnoses. Shyanne hopes to one day become an advocate for women and children of color.

Shyanne comes from a large family and enjoys spending time with her siblings. Shyanne’s passions include writing, reading, and preforming spoken word poetry. Shyanne loves being a part of the Foundations commitment to healing practices.

Lindsay Lester
Night Case Manager | Georgia

Lindsay earned her EMT license and certification at North Georgia Tech where she studied EMS professions. During her program, she also volunteered as a firefighter to gain further hands-on trauma related experience. After receiving her EMT certification, she began her long desired journey to make a difference in the world. Two years prior, she started working as a contracted EMT for The Younique Foundation. Now, she is officially a part of The Younique Family as both an EMT and Case Manager.

Lindsay believes that having the privilege to work for this company has grown her education and developed her awareness of the survivors of childhood sexual abuse. She is currently perusing her training in Coping Skills and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and continues to strive for further trauma and mental health related education. The most rewarding part of her position is having the pleasure of meeting and becoming acquainted with such strong and determined women during retreat. Every passing retreat reminds her that there is so much more work to be done in raising awareness and lowering the number of 1 in 4.

During her free time, Lindsay is usually in the gym where she finds her stresses melting away. She also has a love for hiking, running, writing poetry, yoga, and reading anything written by Nicholas Sparks. Her favorite animals are owls (as she loves all kinds) and has them spread around her room and in her car. She also has a passion for journaling and practicing mindfulness whenever and wherever she can.

Kimberlee Sorensen
Trust & Safety Specialist | Utah

Kimberlee attended Utah Valley University where she received her bachelor’s degree in Emergency Management. She is a certified EMT and continues to grow her knowledge in the medical field. She has a passion for working with trauma survivors and helping them on their healing journey. She has experience facilitating support groups, and her desire to help continues to grow. She is a part of the Army National Guard and has enjoyed serving others. In her spare time, she enjoys playing sports, riding dirt bikes, boating at Lake Powell, cliff jumping, and spending time with her cute niece.

Ashley Buchanan
Case Manager | Georgia

Before working for The Younique Foundation, Ashley worked with a range of populations including adults and children who struggled with issues of trauma, abuse, neglect, addiction, and mental health. Ashley has previously worked at a dual diagnosis residential treatment center and with the foster system in Georgia. She attended Southeastern University in Lakeland, Florida, where she received her bachelor’s degree in social work. Ashley enjoys spending time with her family, friends, and cats. She has a great passion for helping others and making a difference.

Lacey Larson
Logistics Manager | Utah

Prior to her work at The Younique Foundation, Lacey worked at a residential treatment center for women with drug and alcohol dependence, domestic violence, and sexual trauma. Lacey has held many positions that focus on her main passion: helping others. She has a degree in Psychology and Human Services. Lacey has volunteered with United Way and Primary Children’s Medical Center, assisted with first responder training, and loves volunteering in her children’s school classrooms. In her free time, Lacey loves to have adventures with her two cute kids. She also loves jogging, hiking, camping, and traveling.

Marsha Dickerson
Logistics Manager | Georgia

Marsha was born and raised in the small town of Dahlonega, Georgia. After graduating high school, Marsha joined the Army where she served multiple tours in states and overseas. After transitioning from the military, she started her career assisting homeless veterans—particularly women—find gainful employment. Marsha has held many positions where the focus has been helping others. She is very passionate about her work and feels honored to help women learn how to heal through education and empowerment. Marsha is currently pursuing her master’s in social work and she loves to volunteer whenever possible. In her free time, Marsha enjoys caring for and going on adventures with her two daughters, as well as hiking, horseback riding, fishing, and playing piano.

Mark Hartvigsen
Online Course Manager

Mark has worked at The Younique Foundation since the beginning of 2017. Prior to his work at the Foundation, he taught at the college level in a variety of fields. He is passionate about the power of education to help survivors on their healing journey, and he is grateful for the opportunity to interact with the amazing women who attend The Haven Retreat. Mark is also a music aficionado and has played the piano for almost his whole life. He is currently having fun struggling to learn to play the cello. Additionally, he enjoys hiking and skiing in the beautiful mountains of Utah.

Culinary Team

Greg Cornelius
Executive Chef | Georgia

Chef Greg has been in the restaurant industry for over 25 years as an executive chef at fine dining restaurants, private clubs, and multi-unit operations. Chef Greg has placed an emphasis on locally sourced whole foods and using quality healthy ingredients. His culinary style is wide ranging and diverse and he likes to employ cultural influences, both international and regional. Chef Greg believes food is medicine, and his objective at the retreat is to provide creative, healthy, healing, and comforting foods. He also plans to build a database of recipes and cooking demonstrations to share with our retreat guests and friends. His hobbies include hiking, paddle boarding, beekeeping, gardening, and spending time with his wife and two sons.

Colby Hall
Executive Chef | Utah

Chef Colby studied culinary arts at Utah Valley University and has worked in the culinary industry for over 12 years. With experience in all aspects of food service from working at fine dining restaurants to catering events he has always loved the power that food has on people and humanity. Colby loves to cook modern but accessible food that you feel like you could incorporate at home.

Colby believes food can become a deep part of someones life to help connect with others and their cultures. His goal at the retreat is to provide food that will be healthy, nourishing and fun. He wants to introduce new food while serving some familiar favorites as well. Colby lives in Sandy, Utah with his wife Shannon and their Shiba Inu puppy Amaya. His hobbies include soccer, gaming, and crying when the Utah Jazz lose.

Moni Cardenas
Culinary Lead Cook | Utah

Moni has over six years of experience in the hospitality and restaurant industry. In high school they were part of a culinary program called Prostart, a special elective class that helps students discover new talents and interests in the culinary field. They joined a culinary competition team sponsored by Prostart. Their team went on to win best dessert in state in 2012 and best entrée in state in 2013.

From there they jumped right into professional kitchens and have been cooking ever since. Their experience includes managing a food truck specializing in authentic, wood-fired Italian pizza, working in the banquet kitchen at the Grand America, and training in farm-to-table cuisine at Culinary Institute of America. They have a passion for fresh food and believe in the power of a great meal. Their other hobbies include spending time with their family and friends, traveling, listening to music, and hanging out with their sweet dog, Ren.

Mars Jones
Culinary Cook | Utah

Mars has worked in food service for over seven years. He spent many hours as a child bonding with his dad in the kitchen while making food for his family. Mars loves seeing the happiness from people eating delicious food; and knows no matter the diet or allergy you can create tasty food. He believes that food can have a strong influence on people’s lives and loves the opportunity he gets at The Younique Foundation to serve the amazing retreat participants.

Mars loves going out with his wife, Baylee, and son, Jeremiah. He enjoys watching movies and listening to music. Playing board games and enjoying family time is one of his favorite pass times. He enjoys spending time with his two dogs Roxy & Duke, especially Duke and his never-ending energy.
